Tell us about your sports & fitness background.

I love sports! I played, soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, tennis and softball. Although, I grew up loving sports I never really knew anything about being physically fit. I was really hard on my body, not really knowing proper form or technic. I have always struggled with my weight and have tried every diet.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I love to swim, fish, camping, hiking, hunting, sewing, crafts, gardening, reading, family history research, spending time with my family.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit Garland? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

OMG my first WOD, I thought I was going to DIE, I thought for sure, what did I get myself into. I think I threw up and later asked myself if I was crazy for signing up for this…..but then as time went on and I saw others starting out I would remember to lift them up because I was there once. I knew if I could do it, overcome it, then I knew the right words to tell them that they too could do it. That’s basically what the Cross Fit family is about, lifting each other up being there for each other, to cheer each other on and never leaving anyone behind. Many times I have been last but I never finish alone, someone is always there to push me and let me know I can do it.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit Garland? (before / after)

Since starting Cross Fit I have lost about 84 pounds, I have gained muscle, I have gained confidence in myself. I see myself being a better example for my daughter. I’m happier! I’m not on so many medications and I’m not feeding my body all the trash I did before, I’m making better/healthier choices. NOW, I am human and cheat of course I’m not perfect. When I do cheat, I just dust myself off and get back on my healthy wagon. It really hasn’t been as hard as I first thought since I do love to garden and have access to healthier food choices. I just use to cover them with cheese and ranch dressing before, now I’ve learned how much better they are all by themselves or cooked a different way. I don’t see myself focusing so much on the number on the scale but how I feel.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I have experienced that I am strong, I am confident, that I can do anything at any age. I know now that it starts with me. If I don’t push myself, if I don’t put myself out there then I will never know what I am capable of doing.

Please share with us any of your favorite CrossFit / CrossFit Garland moments.

One of my favorite moments was doing a pull over on the rings. I would have never even attempted it but we were just all messing around and someone said I should try so I did and it was just such an empowering feeling. Small but huge for me!

Any advice for people just getting started in the CrossFit Garland tribe?

Take little steps. Don’t expect too much unless you are willing to change and put yourself out there. Remember that everyone has a starting point and some might have started way before you so don’t be intimidated by how they look. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else, you were individually and wonderfully made. Don’t give up! Give yourself a goal and once you reach it then make another and reward yourself with something that reminds you why you’re doing all this in the first place. Be kind to yourself, you didn’t get out of shape in one day so don’t expect results in one day.
